Story behind the work:
Amber
I painted ‘Amber’ in the same year as my painting ‘Freya Under the Tree’. I wanted to draw inspiration from the models of the Pre-Raphaelites, but to also create personal portraits with stillness and calm depth. Amber’s long red hair is the dominating feature of the composition.
I have painted her in a candle-lit room, which highlights the natural variations in her hair and creates a warm contrast with her classical features. At this time, Amber was deciding upon what next steps she should be taking in life, and shortly afterwards moved out of the city.
