Story behind the work:
Freya Under The Tree
As soon as I had met Freya, I knew I wanted to paint her. I knew that I wanted to try and capture Freya's natural, glowing complexion, curly red hair, and kind demeanour. I wanted to reference the Pre-Raphaelite painters, in terms of subject, glowing light and skin.
When I started this portrait in spring 2021, I was in the middle of my 100 portraits in 100 days series and was painting full time due to being furloughed. This meant that I was in a unique creative flow at the time of painting Freya, I was drawn-in, fascinated by the tree’s shadow on her face and the dream-like look in her eyes.
