Story behind the work:
Lara
Lara is painted here in a homemade red linen dress, reflected in the deep velvet curtain and the scarlet chair on which she sits. Lara is willowy, with beautiful pale skin and an alert presence about her. I chose this composition because I was drawn to the turn of her head and a feeling of impending movement to her figure.
This is one of my most recent portraits. In the spring of this year I went to see the John Singer-Sargent exhibition at the Tate Britain, and absolutely loved it. I felt like I was gorging my eyes on his painterly details and faces. I was inspired by Sargent's use of red on red, like in his portrait of ‘Dr Pozzi at Home’ and the attitude in the portrait of Mrs Charles E. Inches. Her eye is the hardest eye that I’ve ever painted and that’s probably why I was drawn to this composition. The unusual angle of the face and eye is part of what makes the portrait special to me, I feel one can almost see through it, to see her entire eye.
