portrait courses based at my studio in central Bristol
I am running a two day course on portraiture using acrylics and focussing on capturing expressions and personalities using vivid colour and light. I'll be guiding a small group (maximum 6 people) through my step-by-step process of getting a likeness and exploring the application of paint.
This course is perfect for those who have always wanted to learn how to paint portraits and are at beginner or intermediate level. During this course you will learn how to mix skin tones, start and resolve a portrait and paint those details which helps to capture a person's likeness.
To get the full benefit of this course, participants will need to source a high-resolution photo(s) of a person that they'd like to paint in advance of the start of the course. Email me with any queries.
All materials will be provided. Please bring lunch.

These evening courses will focus on capturing expressions and personalities using vivid colour and light. You will be guided in a small, friendly group ensuring plenty of one-to-one tuition. I will take you through a step-by-step process of creating a likeness and exploring the application of paint. By the end of the 6 weeks, participants will feel confident in using oil paint to mix skin tones, be able to start and resolve a portrait using the alla prima/‘wet on wet’ method and through this create depth of colour and likeness of their subject.
To get the full benefit of this course, participants will need to source high-resolution photos of a person that they'd like to paint in advance of the start of the course. I recommend taking multiple photos of the person they’d like to paint in interesting lighting.
All materials (including brushes and paint) and light refreshments will be provided. Please bring any painting equipment such as table top easels and brushes that you're used to using.
